DeerFlat Wild Life Refuge Helpers

Goal of Program: To improve the safety and beauty of the refuge by collecting trash.

Duties:

  • Collect trash in adopted area, South Parking Lot #3, at least every other month for two years when the area is open to public access. 
  • Place filled and tied trash bags only in designated areas. 
  • Appoint a group contact person and alternative contact person to convey information between the refuge and the adopting group.  Make sure that the volunteer coordinator has current contact information.

  • Inform participants of the possible presence of allergens (e.g., dust, exhaust fumes, pollen, etc.)  Group members with allergic reactions to any of these conditions should not participate in litter cleanup.
  • Contact the refuge at least a week before a pickup and arrange to obtain supplies.
  • Contact the refuge within a week of cleanup to report total number of volunteer hours.
  • Obtain supplies and materials from refuge staff during regular business hours.  Return unused supplies within one week of the cleanup.
  • Attend an orientation session.
  • Conduct a safety meeting prior to each litter cleanup.  Make sure that all participating group members attend the safety meeting before collecting trash.
  • Provide a first-aid kit and adequate drinking water during litter cleanup.
  • Ensure that no participating group members possess or consume alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs on the adopted section.
  • When participants are younger than 18, provide adult supervision by a minimum of one adult for every 10 youth.  Participants younger than 18 must have a release formed signed by a parent or guardian before participating in litter cleanup.

Qualifications:

  • Good physical condition and an ability to walk and bend. 

Group commitment:

  • Collect trash in adopted area at least every other month for two years when the area is open to public access.  Starting May 2009

 Refuge commitment:

  • Erect a Refuge Helpers Litter Control sign displaying the group name at the adopted area. 
  • Provide safety guidelines, safety vests, flags, and trash bags.
  • Remove filled trash bags the first workday following a pickup, whenever possible.

Refuge Helpers Adoptable Areas

Adopting groups are responsible for scheduling litter collection every other month between August and May, except where noted.

Litter collection at least four times per year (August-January & April-May):

Scheduled Days: from 10 AM - 12 PM, Second Saturday of the month, Starting May 2009 (Except where noted).
